Fight MRSA with SAFESKIN Kids Antibacterial Gel

sucking her thumb

source: mandiehman on Instagram

Right after her second birthday, our youngest daughter began sucking her thumb. She was such a high-needs baby/toddler that we really didn’t try to stop this habit because — after two years of screaming — car rides were suddenly peaceful and she began sleeping through the night!

Then, in March of this year, I noticed a big yellow blister on one of her thumbs. A friend of mine had been dealing with a staph infection on her son’s thumb, and it looked a lot like what she had described, so I took pictures and emailed them to a few people to get their opinion.

Everyone said the same thing: it looks like staph.

We made a doctor’s appointment for the next day and our pediatrician took one look and said the same thing. He asked a nurse to come help us hold her still so he could drain the blister.

Shortly after he began, he said, “It’s not staph.” It turns out that we paid $200 to have a a callous diagnosed. Yes, a callous.

The worst part? He said, “Unfortunately, now that we’ve opened it up, it is at risk of an infection.” Ha, of course it is!

The pediatrician gave us a prescription for a strong antibiotic cream, which I never filled. I tend to use antibiotics as a last resort, and we decided to just keep the area clean and watch it. Thankfully, at two-and-a-half years old, we were able to tell her not to suck that thumb since she had been switching between both thumbs (and her finger, LOL) anyway. It healed well, and she still only sucks the “safe” thumb.

Thankfully, that’s been our family’s only experience with MRSA!

Alternatives to Antibiotic Creams

Although we’ve certainly used antibiotic creams in the past, we haven’t bought any in a couple years and the one little tube we have is probably expired by now. I’ve been meaning to research silver nitrate and some other alternatives but we just haven’t had a need for them — especially since adding Redmond Clay to our first aid kit — so I haven’t gotten around to it.

However, I recently received an email about trying out the brand new SAFESKIN Kids Antibacterial Gel from Kimberly-Clark Professional. Honestly, my first thought was, “Antibacterial?! Agh!” Eliminating antibacterial soaps was one of the first green changes we made, so I tend to be pretty skittish around products that promise antibacterial properties!

I Googled it a bit and couldn’t find any more information about the product, so I responded to the email and asked for a list of the ingredients. They sent me back a picture of the back of the box, and I was really excited to read through the ingredients list because this is yet another example of a mainstream company making efforts to provide more natural products.

(And I don’t mean by greenwashing, either — as far as I can tell, they don’t make a big deal out of this product being a “green” product, but I’ve researched all of the ingredients in the EWG’s Skin Deep Database, and it’s definitely one I’m comfortable using!).

Here’s the ingredients list with links to the ratings in the database:

After my research and reading, I think this product would make a great alternative to an antibiotic cream in your first aid kit. To be clear, it’s not meant to heal an existing infection, but I think most people use antibiotic creams as prevention anyway, and this topical gel provides a physical barrier to MRSA, which is a highly contagious staph bacteria that can infect the skin, invade other parts of the body and resist many antibiotics.

What I really like about this product is that it’s formulated as a long-lasting barrier on minor cuts, scrapes, wounds, burns and bug bites, so that you only have to change the bandage every two days (as long as it doesn’t get wet!).

Ahh a topic after my own heart.  I’m constantly trying to balance the business of life and keeping up with good wholesome home cooked meals on a tight budget.  Cause lets face it cooking meals on a budget when you have the time is managable, keeping up with a busy schedule is fine when you have convience behind you but combining both is enough to send my brain spinning.  I’m still re-evaluating what is important and what is unneccessary.  My family does well when I follow a ‘Less is More’ attitude.  Some days it works others it doens’t.

So true, Sarah — I imagine it is just one of those things that’s always a bit of a struggle as you look to find a balance during busy seasons. Love your less is more mantra!

We’re definitely in the process of making food changes. Slowly but surely we are incorporating more organics: we are part of an organic CSA, but our season in Northern Ontario is short. We have started drinking organic milk, using organic butter instead of margarine, ordering pastured beef, pork and chicken from our CSA farm. We make most of our own baked goods and have started cutting out white flour and sugar as much as possible. My husband and I both work full time and have two small children, so we need to balance both the time and cost of eating this way… but we’re making progress. Looking at my list, I feel like we’ve come a long way! But it happened in baby steps, and we will always be striving for better (like kicking my Diet Coke habit!) Nice work on your food changes! :)

Awesome changes! We’re about a month into our changes, and I can tell you, it’s worth it! Great post!

That last pic is titled Soup Night from good cheap eats. I’m searching on that site for the recipe but can’t find it! Do you happen to have a link? It looks awesome.

That post is coming later this month. Thanks for asking.

This has been on my heart lately.  I have 3 girls with another baby girl on the way.  I home school.  I would love to grind my own flour, eat organic only, and rid my pantry of anything processed, including white sugar.  I did this a few years ago and about went crazy in the process.

It is very time consuming to make everything from scratch and I was not giving my family the best of myself.  Now, I try to balance my time (and budget).  I do the best I can and try not to compare myself to others.  Some weeks we have excellent quality from scratch food, some weeks we have canned ravioli.

It’s hard b/c I know how important good food is for our bodies and how much better I feel when we eat well…but its also not good for me to be on my feet all day in the kitchen and ignore my other duties.  I know some have it down to science but the kitchen work requires my full concentration…I am just not that skilled!

I try to focus on what we’ve accomplished (no more cokes, almost no fast food to name the biggies) and remember that in this season of my life, I am giving my best.

It is really hard. I tried doing it a few years ago and got us into a heap of debt. I’m trying to be more measured this time.

I read The China Study a few summers back and it about did me in as I realized how unhealthy our diet was. My husband as not ready to take the extreme measures suggested in that book but we have tried to be healthier since then….we have a long way to go though!

Well, I think baby steps are always good. You’d be amazed at how changes can come about that way.
